A hell of a battle took place against the police and the activists of the Pakistan Police Party (PPP) as they marched into the pace where Benazir Bhutto was scheduled to make a speech. Instead she was kept under house arrest. The activits of the PPP were invloved in the play of hide and seek with the police officials when their leader was arrested, at the capital Islamabad and the twin city Rawalpindi, still the government denied.
Junior Minister for Information Tariq Azeem, said that it was wrong to say that she has been arrested. She has been given all the security, thats all. Bhutto was free to go anywhere she likes, but the government wants her security, he added. PPP leaders said that more than 50,000 workers reached Rawalpindi from Lahore and other cities while thousands of them were stopped on the way.
A police official posted outside Bhutto’s residence said that she was not allowed to go anywhere and she has been served with arrest warrants and her house has been termed as a sub-jail.
The Liaqat Bagh ground, where Bhutto had planned to address the protest rally, was flooded with water late Thursday night. Heavy containers and barbed wire barriers blocked the roads leading to the venue.
The police also barricaded all highways between Punjab and North West Frontier Province (NWFP) to foil the attempt of PPP workers to reach Liaqat Bagh.
