
The Pakistani Oppsition Parties call for the end of the emergency declared by the President Parvez Musharraf, for the parliamentary elections would not be meaningless under the emergency.
Benazir Bhutto said on Sunday that the emergency laws would make the election campaigning difficult. Ms. Bhutto is in Lahore, where she plans to lead a protest march Tuesday against the state of emergency.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice welcomed Musharraf’s idea of having the election and expressed her desire to step down as army chief. She also said the current situation in Pakistan is not ideal, but the US will stand by the South Asian country as a friend and ally.
